Which of whole milk and low-fat milk can help reduce my child's risk of being overweight? The results of a Canadian study may surprise many people, because the study found that children who drink whole milk are 40% less likely to be overweight or obese than children who drink low-fat milk.
St. Michael's Hospital researchers analyzed data from 28 studies on the relationship between children's overweight risk and drinking milk in 7 countries or regions, involving nearly 21,000 children between the ages of 1 and 18, and found that 18 of them showed that children who drink whole milk reduce the risk of being overweight or obese, but no study has shown that drinking low-fat milk can reduce the risk of being overweight or obese.
It is worth noting that current Canadian dietary guidelines recommend that children drink low-fat milk from the age of two to reduce the risk of being overweight or obese. The study's lead author, Jonathan Maguire, a pediatrician at St. Michael's Hospital, believes that this approach does not make children thinner than drinking whole milk.

Maguire said that this study is only an observational study, and it is impossible to determine that whole milk is the cause of reducing the risk of being overweight. "Whole milk may be associated with other factors that reduce the risk of being overweight or obese." The researchers plan to do a randomized controlled trial next to further explore the association between the two.
